As a school counselor, my mission is to help students learn about themselves and develop in the areas of; personal/social emotional, education, and career. The purpose of a school counselor is to help students achieve happiness and success within their social and educational context. For young children that sometimes means adaptation to their educational environment, and addressing any social or family problems that may interfere with the psychological health. For older children choice of career based on interest and ability take precedence, although serious problems such as friendship issues, bullying or harassment leading to severe stress are also addressed.
The successful school counselor is one who takes the role of a concerned and empathetic adult, who is able to listen and win the trust of students.
The school counselor implements a comprehensive school counseling program that promotes and enhances student achievement through a guidance curriculum, individual instruction, group activities, consultations with parent and student, and responsive services. The comprehensive school counseling program should meet the needs of all students. |
